So this week, Jay-Z launched Tidal, his new music service that he bought earlier this year for $56 million. He revitalized the music service and made it into what he and a number of others think will be the new biggest thing in technology and music. I was listening to a radio show that was talking about how it seems as though this was the last piece of the puzzle for Jay-Z to become a billionaire; he’s conquered music, fashion, sports, business in general, and the only thing left was technology. But he’s not keeping the wealth to himself. Many other music stars, from Madonna, to Kanye West to Nicki Minaj to Jack White to Deadmau5 and Calvin Harris, and of course his wife, Beyoncé’ are in on this as part-owners in the business. The point of this whole thing is for musicians to take back the power when it comes to their music. They are trying to go up against music platforms like Spotify who are streaming their music for free. Taylor Swift even pulled all of her content off of Spotify back in November because she felt that music shouldn’t be free. Tidal will offer exclusive content and CD/HD quality music, videos, and lyrics; here’s the catch: you have to pay for it; $10 for the standard package and $20 for the premium. Mr. Carter & Company think this will be widely successful, but there are many others who disagree and I see why. One could go on Spotify and listen to free content with their super expensive studio-quality headphones and get the same experience, YouTube has free HD videos, and let’s be real, any exclusive content released on Tidal will be available to non-users within a matter of weeks. Ultimately, it would take a super-fan, a super-supporter, or someone really into artists’ rights to pay for this service. And I mean, a lot of people have faith in him; he did bring the Nets to Brooklyn.

I also forgot to say that he started a #TIDALforALL hashtag which became a big deal. But is it really Tidal for all if not everyone can afford to shell out $10-$20 for the service?

A horrible tragedy struck the African country of Kenya yesterday as multiple gunmen representing Somalia's Shebab Islamists stormed a Kenyan university and executed 147 people. The Somali extremists have claimed responsibility for the terrorist attack, claiming that they will persist until the Kenyan president withdraws his troops from Somalia. This vicious attack comes only a few years after members of the Shebab stormed a shopping mall in Nairobi (September 2013) and took the lives of 67 people over the course of four days. This bloody war between Kenya and Somalia is often overlooked by the American media but there have been recent (and unconfirmed) rumors that the US is lending support to Kenya via small, special forces teams.

Came across this article on Twitter the other day, shared by Nautilus Magazine. It investigates the history of memes (did you know Richard Dawkins coined the word, and it wasn't about the internet?) and thinking about the Internet meme as a Dawkinsian meme.... It gets kinda heady, but worth a read!

Okay, so maybe this isn't exactly the most serious thing in the world, but it's kind of awesome. As an April Fool's prank, on April 1st, Google made it possible to play Pac-Man on Google Maps. This means that you could literally have Pac-Man cruising around the streets of Washington D.C. or Paris France. The game was a big hit and generated quite a bit of buzz. I'm pretty sure they've taken it down now, as I tried to see if Pac-Man still worked on Google Maps today but couldn't find it. It may have been up a little after April 1st, but seemingly not much. Unless there's maybe still some way to play? Because seriously, I'm angry that I missed this.

Furious 7 got released last night which is exciting but also sad! It's the final movie for the Fast and Furious crew and I have to say, I didn't think this day would come. While they were filming this movie, Paul Walker (who plays Brian O'Conner) tragically died in a car accident, devastating his family, co-stars, and millions of fans. The cool part is this: with the approval of his family, special effects were used to piece together old images of Paul Walker to finish the movie. It's amazing what technology can do these days! I haven't seen it YET but you can bet I wont miss it in theatres.

I can't wait to see that movie! The Rock named his daughter Pauline after Paul Walker.

Currently I'm taking a European Prehistory class so I'm finding all of the recent history articles pretty interesting. Today trending on facebook was an article talking about a prehistoric man found in South Africa named Little Foot by scientists that has been recently dated at 3.67 million years old which makes him one of the oldest human ancestors ever found. I just thought this was an interesting recent discovery.

This article is quite interesting! I'm currently in a Biological Anthropology class, and we're currently focusing on the progression of human evolution and the techniques that are used to date skeletal remains and figure out how they fit into that progression, so I found this piece especially relevant. I think it's cool how simply being able to date a skeleton more accurately could actually have a pretty huge impact. Thanks for sharing this :)

I think I can consider myself a music lover, especially current pop music. So I'll talk about how April 1st was declared the Walk the Moon day in Cincinnati. It's cool to see our city acknowledging an awesome band who is from Cincinnati and their successful journey.

Hope everyone caught Van Halen on Jimmy Kimmel, if not you can see Diamond Dave strutting and singing "Running with the Devil" on YouTube and #Kimmel. Van Halen was one of my favorites in jr. high and high school, it's great to see them together and releasing a new album-and look they're using this new social media thing! I've gotta get into that!

I still don’t hear any fireworks, so I’m going to leave it as that was her way of explaining how good the quality of the service is.
