Oops! Meant to post it here first instead of the 3/16 thread. PBS Idea Channel just released their latest episode, and it ties in with social media (!) by asking if Reddit's upvote capabilities expose broader problems with so-called egalitarian democracy. Fascinating and, as always, a lot of fun to watch with the unstoppable memes in the background and the concise cultural inquiry up front. This YouTube channel is one of my favorites, hands down...gotta say. Link in the title comment head above.

I should watch that! I've always had my doubts about the voting in a content feed like Reddit. The ability to make content disappear by disagreeing with it can create a sort of false consensus where all the visible content conforms to one view or another and anything that doesn't is downvoted to oblivion. That can end up being a prism for crazy ideas to get even crazier and some parts of reddit really show that.

On Tuesday, a German airplane crashed into the French alps, killing all 150 passengers on board. It was immediately perceived as an accident, but after further investigation throughout the week, the cause of the crash is beginning to be chalked up to mental illness. It is believed that co-pilot, Andre Lubitz had been suffering from severe depression and hid this from his peers and superiors. This incident falls into a trend of recent airplane disasters, more specifically the Malaysian Airlines that disappeared last year. Some officials say that this instance may be able to offer some theories as to what happened to the still-missing Malaysian plane. It is still very early in the investigation and very little has been confirmed, but this will be interesting to see what the investigation yields and how it will further impact international airline policies.

So, so sad. This was tearing me up yesterday as I heard that seemed to have been deliberate...

I'd just like to say that is amazes me how people try to use Yik Yak to have heated debates when there's very little that you can say in such a small number of words.

In Mogadishu, Somali, militant Islamists have killed seven people and taken an unknown number of hostages, including some government officials. The Islamic group took control of the Mogadishu hotel around 2:45 PM today, so far Somali Special Forces have not responded. Somali and its capitol Mogadishu, have suffered for decades under different militant groups, I hope the world will offer aid to the people of Somali who suffer under these violent warlords.

I just wonder when all of this will end. The amount of violence going on in the world is ridiculous. All of these attacks...what are they for? What is anyone gaining from them? I don't see anything constructive coming out of any of it and I just pray that this all ends soon.

So, this being a class about social media, I thought a news update about social media that's trending might be an interesting post for this Friday. With livestreaming apps gaining more and more popularity, of course Twitter had to have one of its own ASAP. Periscope, released yesterday, is rumored to have been churned out pretty quickly so that Twitter could try to keep up with competing livestreaming platforms before they got too far ahead. At the same time, there is a distinctive feature in Periscope that's already in the process of being refined and upgraded: the ability to save videos for later viewing and to watch videos that have already been streamed.

It seems like comics and superheroes have gotten to see a new heyday of popularity with the rise of superhero movies. Making the rounds on social media lately is the latest issue of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic where Donatello (the one with the blue headband) dies, apparently permanently. Since this is a comic though and he is Donatello, "permanently" translates to "he's already coming back."

I think this is absolutely awesome. A reporter thought he was clever publishing a story about YouTube based on “inside information” he got from one of their people. He then reached out to Google (they own YouTube) to find out if what he heard was true and instead of sending him back a statement, they sent him a GIF of Charlie from Disney Channel’s “Good Luck Charlie” shrugging her shoulders. Then, from my understanding, when the WIRED people who wrote this article reached out to Google to confirm that the GIF actually came from them, they responded with another GIF, the one with the brown bear bouncing his head up and down with the kids who were observing him.

I had actually not heard of this event yet, but I just saw trending on Facebook, that American astronaut Scott Kelly started his year long stay on the International Space station. The article I read pointed out that that wouldn't necessarily be top news, except that he has an identical twin. So while Scott is on the space station, his twin Mark Kelly will be on Earth. This enables the one-of-a-kind experiment to test the effects of a long time in space on a human body. Both twins will undergo skeletal scans and will undergo regular assessments to determine how much Scott's body changes from Mark's.

I think that is really cool also and something we should definitely not rule out in the future.

This article talks about how social media has an impact in the year 2014 and goes into how that works through using Facebook as an example. The article also goes into specific rules one should follow when using the Internet and what not to do when using social media for the first time. This article is great and something I would recommend for people who just got into the twittering and Facebooking or someone who just wants to know more on the topic.

I’m in a dispute with someone else. This young woman’s death will not go in vain, we, as young people must stop fighting over social media.
